Chapter 21

Eli stepped to the edge and looked down.

He couldn’t see much of the two forest levels below, but he imagined it looked pretty much like the forest a hundred plus meters away, on the far side of the gorge.

It was something to see from this vantage point.

The four layers were laid out for his inspection as if the forest had been sliced down the middle, and both halves pulled apart. Each layer was roughly seventy five meters high, from floor to ceiling, which meant the uppermost branches were three hundred meters from the surface.

He cast his gaze even further down, a hundred meters below the surface level, and took in the raging torrent that passed through the canyon below. The water’s level had risen dramatically over the past few hours as more and more rain found its way into the canyon. Eli spied numerous springs and waterfalls scattered along the cliffs far below. All were emptying their contents into the torrent below, adding to the river’s violence, making it an even more daunting barrier.

The scale, violence, and grandeur of what was on display above, around, and below him joined in a confluence of natural wonder that threatened to overwhelm his senses. He took several calming breaths, and reminded himself that the bridges they had erected were stable, safe. From the corner of his eye, he spied another Minith warrior begin his journey down the nearest cable, toward the far side. Eli turned and watched, pleased that they had finally settled into a good, steady rhythm. Arok and Adrienne—both sent across earlier to oversee the operation on the far side—were doing a great job.

Despite the relative ease with which the soldiers passed over the chasm, it took a certain courage to give one’s body over to the thin cable that delivered them to the western edge. Quite a few soldiers—experienced, hardened Minith soldiers—initially balked at taking their turn on the zip line. Those that declined were sent to the rear to await the next carrier run amid jeers and scorn from their fellow warriors. Now, after two hours of safely moving troops over the six cables, no one balked. The crossings had been tested, proved safe by the hundreds that had already gone across. Together with the threat of being labeled a coward by their peers, it was enough to keep the long lines moving along with no further interruption.

Still, the going was slow.

Too slow.

Two hours had delivered less than a third of their forces across the canyon to the far side. Even with the remaining carriers flying non-stop to ferry troops, over four thousand troops still remained on the eastern rim.

“How long do you think we have, EJ?”

Eli turned to find Benson—his friend, and newly promoted captain—standing to his right. The man’s helmet was off and his face was tipped upward, into the rain, eyes closed. As Eli looked on, Benson opened his mouth and stuck out his tongue to capture some of the downpour. Eli grinned, and a bit of the invisible weight he carried evaporated.
